Texas Car Insurance Tips

The following is a great article I found regarding a few tips for saving on Texas car insurance quotes:

“You can save on Texas car insurance just by following a few tips. Keep the following in mind when looking for a quote.

Texans are blessed with courteous drivers and fine highways. Why shouldn’t they be able to save on auto insurance too? One of the best ways to save money on car insurance is to shop around for comparison quotes. Rates for car insurance in Texas can vary a lot. This may seem time consuming, but you can actually get several quotes quickly by:

1. Getting quotes online at an insurance comparison site. From the convenience of your computer you can enter your information once and typically get several quotes back. Of course you can also visit the individual Web sites of different insurance companies and request quotes individually.

2. Picking up the phone book and calling agents. Get at least three quotes from different companies/agencies for comparison.

It helps to be prepared when you start getting quotes. Know what coverages you need and deductibles you can afford. The state of Texas requires, at the minimum, that you have coverages for Bodily Injury and Property Damage. Bodily Injury limits are a minimum of $20,000 per person and $40,000 if two or more persons are injured per accident. Property Damage limit is a minimum of $15,000 per accident. You may want to increase these for added peace of mind.

Have your vehicle information ready, and maybe even your Social Security Number. If you already have a Texas auto insurance policy, have it out when you go online or make your phone calls.

Other ways you can save money are by increasing your deductibles and taking advantage of any discounts available such as multi-policy, Anti-theft and more. Of course, keeping a good credit record and clean driving record are very important to keeping your car insurance costs low.”

I very much agree with the above. I saved a couple hundred a year by increasing my deductibles. Every little thing like this counts big when added up..

Texas Car Insurance Coverage

Here is a question by Linda:

I’m buying a used car in Texas, and need car insurance coverage; what is the minumum required by law?
Car insurance in Houston is so expensive!! I was wondering what is the minimum coverage that I need to pay? I can’t afford to pay almost half of my monthly payment on car insurance!! That’s crazy!

Do you know what is the minimum required by law? It would be a 60 months leased car.

Thank you!
GOD bless!

The Answer:

Hi Linda,

In Texas the minimum requirements for liability are 25/50/25. This insurance will cost you about $25 a month.
There is a good insurance company in Dallas. See my source below.
Hope this helps. Good luck and God bless :)

Here is an article I found dealing with obtaining car insurance for imports. This information can be applied in Texas or anywhere in the U.S.:

“Look for imported car insurance from a specialized insurance company who deals with imports. Basic insurance companies can not help you out with your import car insurance needs. Many insurance companies simply do not want to provide insurance policies for imported cars and if they do provide insurance, many times it is very expensive.

Import car insurance comes with a set of hurdles that you have to overcome. You must make sure that you’re your legal documentation is in order. You must deal with customs issues, import taxes, emissions standards compliance, pest control during shipment and a number of other issues. Look for a price that you feel is comparable and fair. Be ready to answer a lot of questions. This includes knowing your vehicle really well. Compare side by side, and apples to apples and get at least 3 quotes on import car insurance. Most insurance carriers will try to out do their completion and you will benefit from their completion.

Be ready to run down a list of features that your import car has that will save you money on your insurance premiums. Insurance companies often give individual seeking import car insurance a hard time and they can charge you high premiums. Do not be scared away, be persistent and look for a reliable carrier with the best deal. There are insurance companies that will gladly assist you and it is possible to have an import car insurance policy tailor fit to meet your needs.”

– It can’t be stressed enough how one should be persistent to look for a reliable carrier for your import.

“Make sure that the insurance company that you select is an expert of the ins and outs of insuring cars not made in their country. Ask to see their history in handling the needs of customers who have import cars. Search around and keep searching until you feel good about a company.

Know your mileage that you plan to put on the vehicle each year. Keep it low and try to find a special limited mileage policy. Keep your import safely locked in a garage. This will reduce your policy quote. Most owners of imports want to keep their cars in garages to protect them any way so this is not a problem. You will need to tell them how many people are in your family and who will be driving the car. Your driving record will also come into play so be a careful and conscientious driver and keep your premium to a minimum by maintaining an excellent driving record.

Texas Auto Insurance Laws

Here is another additional information about Texas auto insurance laws. This may or may not be repeat info but it’s been written at a different angle…..

“If you operate a motor vehicle in the state of Texas, you are required to provide insurance in case of an accident. Texas auto insurance law specifies that you must have adequate coverage to pay for any damages that are a direct result of your driving negligence.

The amount of insurance that you purchase is called coverage, and Texas law specifies a certain minimum coverage that you must purchase. First, you must purchase $20,000 minimum coverage for every injured person, a total of $40,000 to pay for all of those who have been hurt in an accident, and $15,000 minimum to cover property damage. This is the very basic minimum coverage that you may purchase under Texas auto insurance laws and it is commonly referred to as 20/40/15 coverage.

When you are choosing Texas auto insurance, be sure to discuss with your insurance agent whether you should choose 20/40/15 coverage or another plan. You should realize that if you are in an accident, and damages are more than your coverage provides, you will be held liable or responsible for the exceeding damages. Therefore, consider carefully the amount of coverage you purchase. When you purchase a Texas insurance policy, the first page will be called a Declarations Page. This page contains all of the details regarding your insurance policy and coverage so make sure that you read and understand it thoroughly. Also, you will receive a Consumer Bill of Rights when you purchase your policy. Reading through these rights will help you understand your policy and Texas auto insurance laws in greater detail.

There are eight different types of Texas auto insurance that you may purchase.

Towing and Labor Coverage Towing and Labor Coverage covers the cost of towing fees and labor fees due to your car’s inability to operate at the scene of your car’s breakdown.”
